Have you ever stumbled upon a collection and been completely bowled over by how you're a match made in heaven? That's how I feel about Nightwood. We're soulmates in furniture land. And so, when I met with Myriah of Nightwood to discuss making my desk (which is being made this week!), I couldn't help but look into other ways to bring that reclaimed wood look of Nightwood into our home. I now have a bathroom where this wood ladder, made from lost and found wood, is the focal point. (This photo above of our bathroom ladder is actually taken in the Nightwood studio. Don't you love that patchwork patterned wall of reclaimed wood?! When I have a home someday, I'd love one wall to have this cozy wood look.) Onto my bathroom mini makeover!
+ My amazing bathroom ladder (love!!) by Nightwood. Contact Nightwood if you're interested in a ladder for your home — this ladder isn't listed on the site, but it can be custom made for $90. (It's a great deal as the ladder that originally sparked my idea for a bathroom towel ladder is $149 — and not as cool, in my opinion. Here you're supporting a small business, too.) My towels on the ladder are from the DKNY Home line, available at Bed, Bath & Beyond.
+ handmade wood toilet paper holder by Nightwood. Cost, $25. Style, a hundred times better than all the generic chrome options you'll find. (And it fits 3 toilet paper rolls at a time.) That metal container is a vintage milk tin that I found in Maine for $6. It's my container to stash the girl stuff I don't want out and about.
+ I don't like baskets in the bathroom — wet conditions mixed with basket weaving doesn't work in my book. So I'd been trying to find a cheap, chic wastebasket for the bathroom that's small and can be easily cleaned. I found this vintage champagne bucket (with handles!) at Brimfield for $5, and I'm re-purposing it as our bathroom wastebasket. Score.
+ Up in Maine, I found this vintage wood Shaker hanger for $1. It's a pretty little hanger to hang up my robe in the bathroom (since I don't mix hangers in my closet, as you know!).
+ On the door, I hung one of my favorite tote bags (that's a John Derian pattern from a Target event), to store washcloths and brushes.
+ And I did get that teak bath mat from West Elm that I'd had my eye on. I will never go back to cotton bath mats again. It feels rather spa-like on the feet to step out onto wood, and there's no laundry involved! Low-maintenance and stylish — we love our teak mat.
+ I like how the vintage Portland newspaper we hung up as art in the bathroom reads more monochromatic in relation to the putty color walls. So the accent color in the bathroom is really the rich wood tones — the wood accessories pop against the white, black and neutral putty colors.
And that's how I turned a modern bathroom with white subway tile, glass shower door, and black lacquer vanities into a bathroom that feels like us. We like wood here. And I love the play on modern and vintage. Thanks to Nightwood for saving us from jamming our towels in the metal handle of the shower door (wasn't working at all!). That ladder is the rockstar of the bathroom.
