Yesterday was a big day of sun — and strawberry picking. A nearby farm still has some strawberries (probably the last week to pick strawberries this season.) We picked 8 quarts, and I've been snacking on strawberries ever since. Last night, we lit sparklers and made strawberry s'mores. I just sliced up some strawberries, which I discovered is the perfect addition to melted chocolate + toasted marshmallow mashed between graham crackers. Add some fresh strawberries, and suddenly s'mores feel fancy.
This morning I woke up and made strawberry muffins. I love homemade muffins, because if you go to buy a muffin anywhere else (Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, even the local cafes), you never get good chunks of berries. I like my muffins full of berries (big pieces of strawberry or entire blueberries with every bite.) I probably prefer a higher ratio of berry to muffin than Martha or Ina would approve, but it's all about the berries for me. I ate my strawberry muffin sitting on the dock, overlooking the lake — a delicious morning.
Hope you have some fun plans for the weekend. Dan and I are going to a Portland Sea Dogs game tonight with some friends — yay for stadium food and baseball. This weekend, we're hitting up a few barn sales and flea markets — here's hoping we find a few things for our apartment. And I think strawberry shortcake will be our weekend dessert.
