Today I am traveling to one of my favorite places in the entire world: Maine. Dan and I are headed up for our annual Fourth of July trip to his family's camp. When I say camp, I mean a cabin on a lake, in case if you're new to Maine jargon. (The first time Dan told me about camp, I was so confused as I thought camp only referred to summer camp.)
I'm super excited for this trip as it's the first time back for a significant stay in Maine since we got married. Our wedding was held on a farm in Maine that we found, but the dinner the night before was at Dan's family camp. We had a lobster bake! It was just as fun as the wedding. And our amazing wedding photographer, Charlotte Jenks Lewis, came with her crew and was so sweet to take photos. So now we have these fantastic photos from the night. Highlights from the lobster bake: watching my brothers take a kayak out on the lake together, hanging out on the docks, lighting sparklers, and seeing our friends and family together in a place that is so special to us.
The food was the star. Dan's dad got a crate of fresh lobsters from a local fisherman and cooked them in his enormous lobster pot. My mom contributed food from my heritage: German potato salad and Persian spinach patties with yogurt sauce (see plate of food, above.) Funny enough, this random mix of foods actually went quite well together.
For dessert? Whoopie pies in true Maine style. If you're in the Portland area, do check out Two Fat Cats Bakery. The bakery made our whoopie pies for the lobster bake and our wedding cupcakes — both so delicious!
There's something magical about Maine. Or maybe I just love it so, since now Maine also means family to me. I'll be up at camp for the next two weeks — but come visit me here as I'll be blogging from Maine! I'll be sharing what I'm doing and seeing and eating up in Maine, so the posts will be more on simple summer pleasures. Oh, and I'm so excited to play with this camera I just bought for the trip. I made the decision that replenishing my Polaroid film is just too pricey. I hope you all have a fantastic Fourth of July weekend! I feel like a kid as I still totally watch fireworks with eyes wide and mouth open in awe.
{thanks again to charlotte for these photos!}
