After I wrote a post about my father's special story, I decided to embark on a big project to interview my dad over time to find out more about his life and his homeland, a country I've never seen. Lillie of lillie in the city tipped me off to a fantastic post on Global Mama all about recording family stories and using StoryCorps as a super resource. Check it out if you've ever thought about discovering the stories of someone you love. My dad's much older than most of my friends' parents (he's 79.) So my decision to start this project mostly stems from a sense of urgency that if I don't hear his stories now, I may lose out on the moment. We've started weekly conversations where I ask him a bunch of questions and see where the dialogue takes us. I'm hoping to find some memorabilia in his home that can fill an album alongside notes from the stories he shares. It feels so good to start a project I've had in my head for many years.
I found the photo above on Global Mama: Laura has a copy of the list on which her Grandpa kept track of money he earned mowing lawns — he was mowing lawns to pay back the loan he took out to buy her Grandma’s engagement ring. What a treasure!
