On Saturday night, I helped celebrate my friend Ali's impending nuptials. I don't get out much anymore — is that totally lame to say? If we're going out these days, you'll find me and my friends at a local restaurant rather than a bar. But we had so much fun at this speakeasy in the Lower East Side called the Back Room — and they served drinks in an unexpected way that I want to copy. Cocktails, cosmos, and wine are served in teacups. Shots are served in espresso cups. Beer is served by the bottle with a brown paper bag (which looked really fun and kitschy but seems rather wasteful.) I loved the teacup idea. Fun! First off, a teacup is far easier to hold than a stemmed glass (and martini glasses always spill.) But like a wine glass, there's something fancy and festive about a teacup. What I love most: you wrap your hand around a teacup when you're drinking, which feels nice and intimate. While some good tunes were blaring and the bar was filling up with hip people, we were talking over our teacups. I want to serve drinks in teacups the next time I entertain. It's an especially sweet idea for a girls night in.
p.s. All proceeds from the sale of this handprinted teacup gocco print above will be donated to support the devastation of the bushfires in Victoria, Australia. Check out the Janellsopp shop on Etsy for more lovely fine art prints. A new Etsy favorite, for sure.
