I call myself a paper + stationery addict, yet I admittedly knew little about Japanese paper before talking to designer Tomoko of Kichi Inc. at the Gift Show. There's more to Japanese paper than origami, people. Also called washi, Japanese paper is made using tree bark (or bamboo, hemp, or rice) in a process that uses less chemicals than our stateside paper. Washi is typically tougher than paper made by wood pulp (perfect for crafting.) And Tomoko shared that there is far less waste in making Japanese paper. Green + exquisite! I'm smitten.
five things I'm inspired to do with the gorgeous japanese paper by Kichi Inc.
1. frame one big sheet for my bedroom — the Japanesque/blue pattern would look swell
2. make amazing handmade cards — check out these wedding annoucements for inspiration
3. cover the back of a simple bookcase, like the classic Billy, so the lovely pattern peeks out
4. wrap regular old boxes to create stylish office storage for organizing magazine tears. I have too many magazine tears and no system for them right now. It's a mess.
5. make-over an old table or desk: cover surface with a few sheets, top with a custom piece of glass — instant wowzer work surface
